Frequently asked questions
Where are my notes stored?
Notes and attachments are stored inside Lumen Notes on your device. The app has no cloud sync and no server: it never uploads your notes. If you use iCloud or computer backups for your device, the app's data is included in that backup.
How do I back up, or move to a new iPhone?
Open Settings → Backup → Export Backup. The app creates a ZIP with all notes and attachments, then shows the share sheet so you can save it to Files, send it with AirDrop, or store it wherever you like.
Backups aren't encrypted and contain your notes as plain text — keep the file somewhere safe. The app keeps the 3 most recent exports on the device; on the new device, install Lumen Notes and use Import Backup.
How does restoring a backup work?
Open Settings → Backup → Import Backup and pick the ZIP. Before anything is written, the app checks the backup and shows a preview: new notes and attachments, notes already on this device (skipped), and notes you deleted here (restored).
Nothing is overwritten. Importing the same backup twice inserts nothing the second time.
My backup was rejected.
The app rejects a backup that is damaged, was truncated, contains unsafe paths, was made by a newer version, or exceeds size limits. Export a fresh backup from the other device, update Lumen Notes, and try again. Your existing notes are left untouched when an import is rejected.
How do tags work?
Write #tag anywhere in a note. Use a slash for hierarchy: #work/meeting creates a nested tag, and the sidebar shows a tag tree. Tag counts include notes in child tags.
Hashtags inside code blocks or inline code, in links, or in HTML don't create tags.
I lost a draft.
Drafts are saved as you type, so an interrupted note isn't lost. The list shows a Continue Unsaved Draft entry; opening it offers to restore the draft. If you don't want it, discard it from the prompt.
Can I add photos and files to a note?
Yes — use Add Attachment to take a photo, pick from your photo library, or choose a file. Importing the same image twice stores it only once.
With Keep Original Images off (Settings → Images), photos larger than 2048 px are resized to 2048 px and saved as JPEG at 90% quality to save space.
My storage is filling up.
Open Settings → Storage to see how much space the database, attachments, thumbnails and exported backups use.
Deleted notes and unused attachment files are cleaned up automatically after 30 days. Clean Up Now removes them immediately; it can't be undone. Older exports are removed automatically, keeping the 3 most recent.
I deleted a note by mistake.
Deleted notes are hidden from the list, search and export, but they stay on the device for 30 days before cleanup. They can only be brought back from a backup exported before the deletion — restore that backup and the deleted note is restored.
Checkboxes in my note don't respond to taps.
Markdown checklists (- [ ] and - [x]) are rendered, but in this version they aren't interactive. Edit the text to change the state.
Is there sync, a widget or Siri support?
Not in this version. There's no iCloud sync, no multi-device sync, no widgets, no share extension and no Siri or Spotlight integration. Use Export Backup to move your library between devices.
Does the app need internet access?
No. Lumen Notes makes no network requests and has no account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Images linked from the web in Markdown are not loaded; a placeholder is shown instead.
Does it work on iPad?
Yes. On iPad the app uses a split view with a sidebar for your notes and tag tree. Lumen Notes requires iOS 18.0 or later on both iPhone and iPad.
